If there’s one drink which has risen to massive amounts of popularity this passing summer, it’s hard seltzers. But why exactly is there so much hype for these seemingly simple drinks? As it turns out, there’s a few things in particular which make these drinks a popular choice for many…
Hard Seltzers: A New Cult Classic
Flavor
One of the big draws for hard seltzers are the flavors. Beer tends to turn a lot of people off due to its unique taste. The same can go for liquors; certain types may or may not appeal to people as much as other kinds. These seltzers, however, tend to avoid this kind of problem.
Instead of having one specific flavor, these seltzers tend to come in a wide variety of different kinds. Some of the most common ones tend to be fruit flavors, like apple, watermelon, or some kind of citrus. Still, there’s a whole lot of more niche flavors out there, meaning plenty of people can find one that fits for them.
A healthier choice
Another common problem people have with alcohol is finding healthier choices. Beers tend to be pretty high in calorie and carb count, unless you opt for a light variant (which many people have issues with). Mixed drinks also run into an issue with the usually high-sugar mixers used, on top of the higher ABV content.
This is where hard seltzers come in. Most seltzers will only have around 100 calories and little to no carbs or sugars per 12-ounce can. Plus, they tend to have only 5-6% ABV per can, meaning you don’t sacrifice flavor for a low-alcohol content. That means that these drinks find a nice sweet spot for those who want to watch the calories they drink.
Convenience & price
Alcohol quality tends to reflect the price you pay for it. Cheaper options tend to be much less smooth and flavorful than the more-expensive choices. However, those prices can end up getting a little bit to high for what you want to pay. Once again, this is where hard seltzers find themselves at an advantage.
Hard seltzer cases tend to be priced about the same as your average case of beer. Plus, they’re also sold at the same places as beer, meaning you don’t need to make a trip to the liquor store to get them. These two factors, along with the rest make them a common pickup for many drinkers.
