Living in a city that has a focus on sports can be a ton of fun. We get to celebrate our city, and the win, in a mass, as well as mourn our losses over a beer together. All in all, living in Charlotte and the surrounding areas, comes with a big set of perks. However, there’s also one deadly downside that many are accustomed with. Post-Game drunk driving is prevalent in almost all areas that have a big sports presence. While DUI is an obvious downside to taking this chance, there are far more dangerous issues that can occur. So, what can you do as a sports enthusiast to keep yourself and friends out of danger?
Post-game drunk driving: Avoiding DUI and Danger
Nearly half of sports fans will have a drink during the game, according to statistics. Furthermore, more than 80 percent of those drinkers will have a second. While two drinks during the course of a four house game isn’t going to ruin you— who’s to say you don’t have two more? Then, after a win, you hit the bar for a few more to celebrate. Next thing you know, you and your friends are hopping in the car after midnight, drunk.
Prevention
While the obvious way to prevent this issue is to not drink heavily if you plan on driving home, there are plenty of other options you can use. Such as hiring driving services, electing a DD, or waiting out the traffic. After all, the goal is not only not to drive drunk, but also avoid drunk drivers.
Choosing a DD
No one wants to be the DD after a big win— but that’s why you pick one ahead of time. If you did it last week, someone else does it this week. Swapping off with friends is a great way to avoid a DUI, or accident.
Furthermore, as a group, decide what will be an appropriate time to make the trek home. You don’t want to be stuck in a bunch of traffic, but you also don’t want your DD to have to watch you guys party until the party dies out. So, find a happy medium. Wait until an hour, an hour and a half after the game, and then drive home.
Or, if no one is up for that— use a hired service
If no one is stepping into the DD roll, then you’re going to have to hire a driving service. Uber and Lyft are city-wide, and easy to use. Furthermore, when a group all splits the fare— it’s pretty cheap.
The key here is that there are plenty of alternatives to post-game drunk driving. Lastly, leave your car at home. By doing so, you physically cannot drive home after a night out. Ultimately, self-policing can make a huge impact when it comes to saving yourself from spending unnecessary money, charges, or time in jail…
