A North Carolina man, who was accused of striking a pedestrian with his vehicle while intoxicated, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor hit-and-run, as well as a felony hit-and-run. This sentencing took place six years after the incident took place, and the judge has sentenced the defendant to seventy-five days in jail, three years of probation and a suspended sentence of one year in jail. Additionally, the judge has mandated that the defendant must pay the victim’s damages including funeral expenses.
This particular incident took place in May of 2007, when the victim was walking along Caleb Road, the defendant slammed on his brakes before striking the pedestrian from behind. Thereafter, the defendant left the scene of the accident without reporting it. The defendant initially told friends and family that he believed he struck a small animal, but later admitted that he may, in fact, have hit a human-being. The guilt riddled defendant later called the police to report the incident.
The defendant had been allegedly drinking before the hit-and-run, and when he finally made it into the hospital for testing, his B.A.C. was .06, which is under the legal limit. However, there is no telling what the B.A.C would have been at the exact time of the accident. The man was charged, and pled guilty to felony and misdemeanor hit-and-run charges.
