A § 1983 civil rights suit has been filed in Alamance County after a Sheriff allegedly detained illegal aliens without probable cause to justify
such detentions. The complaint was filed in U.S. District Court alleging that the Sheriff was illegally targeting and detaining Latinos without probable cause. Further, the complaint alleges that the man attempted to obstruct a federal investigation.
After a two year investigation conducted by the U.S. Justice Department, the court found that the sheriff and his deputies had been arresting undocumented immigrants with the goal of deporting them. Much of these arrests were not legally justified, and it is further claimed that the sheriff was withholding documents and falsifying records during the investigation.
