As the summer season begins and local boaters decide to take to the lakes, it is important to drink responsibly while recreating. Last summer, reports from local police departments in the Lake Norman region illustrated that last year was low in regards to DWI’s and BUI’s. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department has also reported that arrests were down in the whole Mecklenburg region.
“Operation Dry Water” is the name of the campaign that was aimed at bringing local BUI’s and other safety infractions to a halt. According to reports from this past summer, there were five BUI/DWI arrests, as compared to the summer before where seventeen arrests were reported. Further, with the increased patrol activity on the waters, it is a good sign that in spite of that, there is a lower arrest number. If numbers stay at this low ratio, it appears as though the soon-to-be summer months with be safe on Lake Norman.
