The District Attorney’s office in Mecklenburg County is going to bring in two outside prosecutors to handle two DWI cases that are pending in Charlotte. The reason is to avoid a conflict of interest in the handling of the cases. The two people charged with DWI are connected to the DA so to avoid the public thinking they will get special treatment, two attorneys who are not tied to the Mecklenburg DA’s office will handle those cases.
One of the cases involves a man who is charged with DWI who managed the campaign for the DA. He was charged with resisting arrest as well as DWI. The other case involve a defense attorney who worked for the DA’s office previously, who is now charged with DWI and speeding. It is not uncommon for the DA’s office to call in outside help if there is a chance that a conflict of interest could arise. Assistant District Attorneys from Mecklenburg have also gone to other jurisdiction to handle cases to avoid a conflict of interest problem.
