Police across the state worked to crackdown on DWIs over the Fourth of July holiday week through a campaign named “Operation Firecracker.” Officers around the state set up checkpoints and targeted patrols to detect and deter impaired drivers. Several counties around the state have started reporting the number of DWI arrests that were made during the operation, with the operation overall being a success.

SONY DSCThe numbers for the state of North Carolina were 1737 DWI arrests during the campaign.  Seven departments in North Carolina have a dedicated DWI task force that targets impaired driving throughout the year. 455 of the 1800 DWI arrests during the operation were made by the DWI task force.  The number of DWI arrests compared to last year increased in some counties, especially in Guilford County which netted 50 arrests last year and made 146 DWI arrests this year.
