Police officer conducting sobriety testDWI detection and enforcement is in high gear this week as law enforcement agencies around the state of North Carolina are targeting intoxicated drivers over the holiday week. Agencies across the state have already started setting up checkpoints and targeted patrols to detect and stop intoxicated drivers. The campaign that is running through the week is named the “Operation Firecracker” Booze It and Lose It campaign. Law enforcement agencies typically run these type of campaigns during holiday seasons throughout the year.

Police in Durham, NC set up their first checkpoint to kick off the campaign over last week. The checkpoint was in operation on Thursday and Friday. Police charged 6 people with DWI while the checkpoint was set up.  Police also had a BATmobile at the checkpoint sight, which allows officer to process DWI suspects quicker. The mobile unit is equipped with Intoxilyzer stations and magistrates on scene.

Police also charged drivers with other offenses during the checkpoint, including 15 people driving with a revoked license, 2 drug charges, and police recovered 1 stolen vehicle. Several agencies from the area assisted with the checkpoint’s operation.
