A man from Asheville, NC has just been sentenced to seven years in prison for receiving his seventeenth DWI. This is an astonishing amount of DWIs.
The average person may receive one DWI in their lifetime. But for this 55-year-old defendant, he has far surpassed that of an average person.
According to the Buncombe County District Attorney, the defendant’s Blood Alcohol Level at the time of his most recent DWI arrest was 0.24, which is over three times more than the legal limit of .08 in North Carolina.
The defendant’s first DWI arrest was back in 1983. This averages out to 1.76 DWIs per year. That is not to say that he hasn’t received more than one DWI a year, in fact, it is almost two a year since his first arrest.
Moreover, the defendant has been sent away and adjudicated as a “habitual DWI offender” over three times since 1983. To obtain that charge, the defendant must have had at least four impaired driving offenses within the past 10 years. Looking at the math above, that is completely feasible for the case at hand.
