Belmont, North Carolina Police have recently enacted a new DWI checkpoint policy that was changed after police chased a suspect attempting to flee from a checkpoint. The suspect ultimately crashed into another vehicle, killing a former mayor and passenger of that vehicle.
The new rule says that officers will now be required to have dash cams set up in such a manner that they will be able to record every angle of the area where the checkpoint is set up. Further, a minimum of three officers must be at the checkpoint at one time. However, the department has not been able to change their policy with regard to police pursuits.
This was an extraordinarily unfortunate turn of affairs, which could have been avoided by the proper police protocol.
