New Year’s Eve is one of the holidays where people like to drink the most. Of course, the more alcohol that you drink, the more unsafe your evening can potentially become. Therefore, it’s helpful to set some New Year’s drinking guidelines. That way, you can ring in the new year in a responsible way…

New Year’s Drinking: Ringing in 2020… Safely

Watch your intake

It can be tempting to go a little overboard with your New Year’s drinking. After all, you want to enjoy yourself while welcoming the new year. Plus, many people tend to host or go to parties. Being around others who drink a lot can encourage you to do the same.

Still, you need to watch just how much you drink. Drinking too much in a short amount of time can lead to you getting overly intoxicated. The last thing you want to do is start the new year off over the toilet, or worse, in the emergency room!

Prepare ahead of time

If you know you’re going to be doing some New Year’s drinking, then it’s a good idea to prepare ahead of time. You won’t want to drink on an empty stomach. While you might think you can drink more, you’ll also end up drunk much faster than you expect.

Also, be sure to drink plenty of water before you do any drinking. Remember, alcohol has a dehydrating effect, due to it being a diuretic. Try to keep your water intake up even once you start to drink, so you avoid those nasty symptoms that come with dehydration.

Watch the roads

Due to the high levels of New Year’s drinking, there also tends to be a high level of drunk drivers out on the roads. Of course, you don’t want to be one of them! If you have had too much to drink, and can’t safely drive, then don’t take the risk. Rather, it’s better to explore alternatives.

For starters, having a designated driver ensures that someone sober will be able to take you home. You can also use a ride sharing app like Uber or Lyft to get you home safely. Or, if your friend is hosting the party you’re at, just spend the night there.
