Memorial Day weekend brings with it social gatherings and outings as part of celebrating and honoring this holiday. With the increased outings and gatherings also comes alcohol consumption. Certainly there is nothing wrong with kicking back and having a couple drinks, but the problem arises after consuming too much alcohol and then deciding to get behind the wheel of either a vehicle or boat. Law Enforcement agencies around North Carolina are ready to combat this problem.
Agencies around North Carolina kicked off its “On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign over the weekend. The campaign started on the 24th and ran through the 27th. Police set up checkpoints on the highways and waterways to check for intoxicated drivers. Police set up checkpoints near recreation areas as well. Law enforcement agencies participate in this campaign three times a year including Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.
The number of citations issued over the weekend has not yet been released. Last year police investigated 913 boating accidents that were related to driving while intoxicated.
