Police in Leland, NC set up a DWI checkpoint over the weekend, which was a routine checkpoint until terror broke loose. Two people who were driving through the checkpoint shot at police. Seven deputies from different agencies were involved in the shooting. It is not clear what lead up to the shooting, but what is clear is that two suspects opened fire on police around midnight at the checkpoint.
The two suspects were taken to the hospital but are in fair condition. The suspects involved in the shooting have been charged with 10 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, 10 counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, one count of felling to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, one count of felony conspiracy, and drug charges.
The officers that were involved are currently on administrative leave with pay. The SBI is currently investigating the incident. The departments of the officers involved are conducting their own internal investigations. Further details will likely be released as the investigation continues.
