Having a hangover feels like natures way of punishing us for having fun. When, in all actuality, it’s pretty easy to prevent by staying hydrated while drinking. So, you want to keep that headache at bay tomorrow morning? Stay on top of it the night before by following a few strategies. They don’t reduce the amount of fun you have— if anything, they increase your fun by keeping you in control of your hangover.
Staying Hydrated While Drinking: Prevent that Hangover
Have a water, then have a drink, then have another water
While staying hydrated while drinking is important, being hydrated beforehand— that makes all the difference. The best and easiest means of staying hydrated while drinking, is going one for one. This is pretty easy to do when you think about it. When you’re drinking at a friends house, make a promise with yourself: after this drink, I’m going to drink a water. It’s even easier at the bar!! Ask that bartender for a water, suck it down, and then order another drink. Ultimately, you’re keeping your body happy while having fun. Pretty fair trade-off if you ask me.
Use water as your mixer
Adding all the extra sugar when you’re drinking is a large part of the issue when it comes to a hangover. Personally, I’ve found that the more sugary mixers I have— the worse I feel the next day. So, consider using water, or soda water, as your mixer of choice. By doing so, you give your body the water it needs to keep hydrated— and also you’re catching that buzz at the same time.
Snack on hydrating foods
Consider skipping the french fries, nachos, and wings— even though they’re delicious…And consider snacking on fruits and veggies, which hold onto a ton of water. While it isn’t the drunk snack of your dreams, it’s a pretty smart method for keeping hydrated if you’re looking to skip some of those glasses of water.
Water before bed
Lastly, consider downing a bunch of water before bed. While those waters at the bar are going to work wonders for you, drinking some before bed is that extra boost of fluids your body might need to completely knock out that hangover. Drinking is easy, but drinking smart? Not so much. So, follow these tips to make for a smarter, better, more enjoyable time out on the town.
