In June, the city of Charlotte hosts the annual Taste of Charlotte festival. Citizens of Mecklenburg County and the surrounding region drive, or take the light rail into the city to sample excellent cuisine, and enjoy themselves. However, in addition to food, the Taste of Charlotte festival also samples beer and other alcoholic beverages. With the delicious options, many people may accidentally push the drinking limit a bit too far. Therefore, with the Taste of Charlotte, also comes greatly enhanced police activity from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
While people in the city are able to walk around and openly drink the alcoholic beverages that are offered during the festival, this is not something that would be able to occur on a normal weekend. Further, with hundreds of people consuming alcoholic beverages, brings a heightened importance to be safe on the roads. The reason being that some drivers will get behind the wheel after having several drinks.
